The Versace Mansion, also known as Casa Casuarina, was built and designed by renowned architect, philanthropist, author and political reformer Alden Freeman in 1930. It was inspired by another home in Santa Domingo, which is the oldest existing house called the Alcazar de Colon in the western hemisphere. The Alcazar de Colon was the house of the son of world explorer Christopher Columbus, and it was built in 1510. In fact, the Casa Casuarina contains a piece of Alcazar de Colon, as one of its cornerstones uses an original brick from the Alcazar de Colon itself.

In 1937, after Freeman’s death, Casa Casuarina was bought by Jacques Amsterdam, who renamed it “The Amsterdam Palace.” Operated as an apartment building, it housed artists attracted by its architectural curiosity.

After Freeman’s death in 1937, the  building was sold to Jacques Amsterdam who converted it into 30 rental apartments known as “The Amsterdam Palace”.  Like most of Ocean Drive, it had eventually become a bit down-trodden, but it was beloved by the artistic community and apartments were usually passed among friends rather than going onto the open market.

In 1992, couturier Gianni Versace first encountered Casa Casuarina. Versace exquisitely restored, expanded, and embellished its features, adding the south wing, the pool and garden areas. Unfortunately Gianni would only live another 5 years, when in 1997 he was shot and murdered right in front of his very front door.

In 2000, the house was bought by Peter Loftin, a telecommunications mogul who conserved Versace’s touches to the residence, and ran it as a private members club.

Later in December of 2009, Events impresario/restaurateur Barton G. Weiss took over the mansion,  imprinting his own signature style on the storied house, reopened as a boutique hotel, restaurant and venue known as The Villa By Barton G.

This is the magnificent mansion that people flock to see whenever they are in South Florida.  It is one of Miami’s most visited spots and is the second most photographed house in America after The White House..

Just recently the Versace Mansion was listed for $125 Million in the market, setting the record for the most expensive residential listing in Miami history and tied for most expensive home in the country with a neoclassical estate in L.A.
